In their first joint meeting, SALIS and Elisad convened in Newton, Massachusetts in 2006, for a program focused on substance addiction and misuse information from a global perspective. Abuse of legal and illegal drugs appears throughout the world and across societies, affecting the lives and work of many different people. Accurate information must also cross boundaries if alcohol, drug, and tobacco problems are to be effectively addressed.

The 2006 meeting was co-hosted by Eric Helmuth (Join Togther) and Jessica Hinkson Desmarais (US Dept. of Education's Higher Education Center for Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse and Violence Prevention). More than 50 people from the U.S., Europe, Canada, and Austraila attended the conference.
